To save the planet, we must care for Self

Updated: Jun 20, 2018

For those of us concerned about the environment and the future of the planet, its easy to become overwhelmed by the news. I have felt a sense of powerlessness when considering the scale of the problem. But I’ve come to the realization that the best way to feel empowered about it is by being a good steward to what I have direct control. Its my sphere of influence.

My sphere of influence includes my children, husband, family and friends. I aim to provide them with health and stability. I try to raise mindful, kind kids who are aware of their place within the world.

My sphere includes my home, the land that I own. I avoid chemicals as much as I can. In my landscaping, I try to find local plants that thrive without a lot of watering. My sphere of influence also includes the animals that I care for, and nature that lives on my land. I do my best to give them all a healthy, natural life.

But before I can accomplish any of this, I must take care of Self. I cannot give what I don’t possess. Therefore, my mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health must be the core of my existence.

As the flight attendant advises “put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping others…” We cannot take care of others until we care of Self. We cannot take care of our community until be take care of home. We cannot take care of our country until we take care of our state. Before we take on the planet’s concerns we must tend to those closer to home.

Imagine if we all took on this attitude. Together, we can make a significant impact in the world, simply by caring for the things in our personal world.

Imagine the ripple effect. Like raindrops in the ocean sending out ripples that ultimately converge together, we have the opportunity to converge our spheres of influence. ~KAt
