What is the Law of Attraction?

What is the Law of Attraction?

In this blog post, I will give a brief explanation of the Laws of Attraction and later, provide some of my favorite authors in case you want to learn more.

The term “Law of Attraction” was first documented by William Walker Atkinson in 1906. He was an attorney, merchant, publisher and author of an estimated 100 books such as The Secrets of Mind Power, Thought Vibration and Kybalion The Three Initiates. He is considered to be a pioneer of the New Thought movement.

In the 60's and 70's the principles were often referred to as "New Age" or "positive thinking." Recently, the Laws of Attraction became widely known because of the popular “The Secret” series and speakers like Abraham Hicks, Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield, Gabby Bernstein, Oprah and others.

However the principles have been discussed and taught for hundreds if not thousands of years! Buddha mentioned the principles in his ancient teachings, "what you have become is what you thought." It is also mentioned in the bible, Proverbs 23:7, it reads "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he."

The Law of Attraction, in essence, include the following ideas:
A) Positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into life.
B) We use the power of our mind to translate whatever is in our thoughts and it materializes into our reality.

Unfortunately, sometimes the Laws of Attraction are distorted and minimized into what I call, "hocus pocus." The "get rich quick" schemes and claims of effortless miracles, similar to the "snake oil" salesmen's false promises. The principles are not some kind of "sleight of hand" trick or dark magic... but when you begin to intentionally make them work FOR you, it feels magical!

The Law of Attraction are real, just like the law of gravity. It is always in effect, impacting your life in more ways than you might realize. (Read about my "cellphone analogy" in my next post, The Six Keys to Manifesting.)

Every moment you are creating your reality, through deliberate intent or unintentional reaction to stimuli. When we first become aware of this it can be overwhelming. How do we begin to live intentionally? I recommend by considering this simple fact: this moment, right now as you read this, has never been before and will never be again. Stop, read that again and take it in!

Right now in this moment you can CHOOSE how to feel...try it! Stop, consider, and then process a simple emotional response of your choice ...let's try "happy"... take a moment and imagine and physically feel "happy." There, you did it! You have begun to practice intentionally processing - and therefore manifesting - the kind of reality that you desire.

And life is simply a chain of moments strung together. The law of attraction states that you will attract into your life whatever you focus on, so by choosing your moments, one by one, you will shape your future. When you focus upon the good things in life, you will automatically attract more of the same. Conversely, if you obsess about every little negative thing, you will actually bring into your awareness more negativity.

Decide for yourself what you want to see in your life. And immediately begin to identify every tiny piece of evidence of its existence already. Little by little what you want to see will magnify and soon you will manifest the life of your choosing.

Keep in mind with this principle, you are already choosing your reality, for better or worse! But now that you are aware you can begin to deliberately shape it to your liking.

My planner/journal fusion, Manifest Your Best™ Everyday makes it easy to practice intentional think/feel. With daily repetition, soon it becomes a natural process.

For a more in-depth understanding of the Law of Attraction is a list of some of my favorite contemporary masters:
Jack Canfield is the founder of Chicken Soup for the Soul™ anthology series, bestselling author and legend in the field of personal development.
Esther Hicks is an inspirational speaker and author. Through meditation, she learned to channel a spirit she calls Abraham and shares this wisdom with her audience. Her pragmatic advice and practical explanations of the law of attraction are transformational. My favorite book is Ask and it is Given.
Wayne Dyer wrote the book Your Erroneous Zones, which is one of the best-selling books of all time. He wrote 21 New York Times bestsellers, and my favorite is Everyday Wisdom.
Don Miguel Ruiz wrote The Four Agreements, a simple yet profound book based on ancient toltec wisdom which essentially promotes the law of attraction. It's a perfect starter book. It changed my life.
Sandra Anne Taylor is the author of Quantum Success, my all-time favorite book on this topic. She explains the universal principles as it relates to the science of quantum physics. Mind-blowing, eye-opening and a must for your manifestation library.  ~Kat
